The objectives of teaching English at secondary school in Indonesia include the mastery of the four language skils reading listening speaking and writing. The language components-vocabulary grammar spelling/pronunciation- should be considered as integrated parts of the language skills. The teaching of language components therefore should be integrated in the developmentof the four language skills. This article will focus on the teaching of writing and grammar in English in the context of teaching English especially at secondary schools. Journal writing activities can be alternative exercises for the students to enable them to apply their knowledge about the language in real life communication.
