When a problem of vocabulary items comes up without warning in the course of a lesson or maybe in the course of the lesson the teacher suddenly realize that a word that s/he has just introduced or is about to introduce is unknown to the majority of the students the teacher has to improvise an explanation and do some unplanned teaching. Seal (in Celce-Murcia 1991) proposes using 3 C s approach when dealing with unplanned and planned vocabulary teaching convey meaning check understanding and consilidate. it is not enough for the teacher to do step 1 and 2 only. S/he needs to be certain that students can use the word and relate it to their personal experience in a meaningful context or do creative problem-solving activities that can depen their understanding of the item.
