This research applying connotative semiotic approach of Roland Barthes explores the denotative and the connotative meanings of the work of Anusapati. Anusapati has been widely recognized as a sculptor who is determined and strongly inclined to focus his interest on wooden materials. He very much appreciates the natural potential of such materials. The source of the idea lies in the artifacts of the rural environment most of which are still in their simple and rough forms. Traditional tools such as lesung (mortars) boats kentongan (wooden drum struck to sound an alarm) fishery as well as other agricultural devices have become idioms often used to generate new meanings with tlie purpose of communicating the real problems faced by tlie society. Interpretation as a method of analysis is focused on the expression of discourse and messages found in the respective work.
