Manuals for teaching foreign languages to native English speakers are extremely variable in the level of advice they give on pronunciaton. Some of this is reliable but some shows a complate lack of undestanding of basic phonetic description. Nevertheless the language of these manuals provides an interesting folk-linguistic resource showing how nonphoneticians describe phonetic catagories.
