For decades studies on ancient world of indonesian history were mainly focused on the porpuse for digging up very important events happened in the past. A little interest has givent by schollars to investigated any unimportant aspects of ancient environment. This paper is dealing with the problem of the origin and function of an ancient garden mansioned in the inscription issued in the firs half of 10 th century and was founded in Malang (Kanuruhan inscription 934 A.D.). That is why the main goal of this paper is trying to know more about that garden as far as possible and to have clearer picture why such garden should be established. At the end of the discussion it will be understood that the ancient garden in Malang might has its very important role in secular purposes i.e. pleasure and religious purposes i.e. monistic duties.
