Implementation of Geographic Information System in Chemistry Laboratory: An Exercise in Integrating Environmental Analysis Assessment
As chemistry related to environmental applications or issues becomes increasingly mainstream at all levels of the chemistry curriculum the inclusion of environmental assessment or management becomes attractive. One tool tahn can aid in the assessment and analysis of the spatial and temporal data common to environmental applications is a Geographic Information System (GIS). GIS has been used in environmental science geology and biology courses but no reports detailing the implementation of GIS in chemistry courses has been described in the literarure to our knowledge. In the GIS-based project described here a common analysis of lead in sediment using atomic absorption spectroscopy (AAS) was incorporated into an environmental assessment of sediment deposition rates in local pond.
